This is a good example of whole of life costing. PROBLEM 31 BOLLARDS REQUIRE LARGE CONCRETE FOUNDATIONS

In order to ensure foundations are not dislodged when a bollard is impacted you need to make them very large and this is problematic as you run into underground services. 

By installing bollards using the Smart Impact Recovery System you can install them as shallow as 350 mm (we even have an impact resistant surface mount design). To stop a vehicle they need to be 650 mm but the foundations are sustainable

Some authorities specify posts should be installed 650 mm deep in paved areas. This is hard work, interferes with underground services, is expensive and causes major damage when impacted.

Because many road-workers consider concrete to be disposable (and until now- it was) they install posts in bases that are easily dislodged- simply creating more work and waste and posing further litigation risks.

Until now the ONLY way to stop a vehicle was to install a 165 mm bollard in a massive concrete foundation at least 1 metre deep and fill it with concrete. This is extremely expensive and despite all this hard work- this can still happen when impacted!
