A steel pipe bollard (as shown left) or a pine log (shown right) may be cheap to purchase but cost hundreds more than a Smart bollard to install. MRWA learnt the hard way that they also cost considerably more to maintain (the bollard on the left was replaced six times last year and eventually the entire traffic island had to be replaced - costing Main Roads department thousands for the one bollard in a single year). The cost of maintaining it over the life of a development (100 years) would have run into hundreds of thousands. The bollard on the right required two staff and two traffic management people, a mobile traffic management unit, new concrete, new paving and hours of labour to replace. Sitting on a busy corner, this was a regular event and I wouldn't want to even know how much this cost the council.

You can install a bollard directly in-ground

Traditionally the only way to stop a vehicle in it’s tracks was to embed a heavy duty steel bollard directly in concrete (and concrete fill). This is a costly way to install a bollard as it requires a substantial concrete foundation to ensure bollard is not dislodged when impacted by a vehicle, more concrete to fill the bollard and as rapid set is not impact resistant, substantial time while you wait for the concrete foundations to cure. If badly impacted by a vehicle, both bollard and surrounding foundations will require replacing - an even more expensive process.

No bollard will last the entire lifespan of a development so installing a bollard directly in concrete will incur large downstream costs (even if never impacted). Now there are sustainable alternatives that improve safety and will save you an enormous amount of time and money over the entire lifespan of a development. Small diameter Bollards

Low cost bollards to prevent access or for deliniation.

Highly vulnerable to damage - you wouldn't want to install these directly in concrete. Some are made from old fashioned plastics that fade and degrade over time or are secured on metal sockets that rust and corrode. They provide no deterrent to vehicle access and are often unreliable as they rip from the asphalt surface when impacted or simply bend and become visually offensive and useless. More recently we have seen fold down or retractable bollards that are costly to purchase, costly to install and not impact resistant. Too many carparks are scattered with useless bolalrds that are too expensive to remove.  We have a sustainable solution ...

Impact Recovery Bollards

You can install large diameter bollards (150 - 165 mm diamater) on Smart Sustainable Foundations (Lifetime Warranty) using the Smart Impact Recovery System. As the name implies - this system makes every-day bollards recoverable from impact.

The system enables bollards to absorb low speed impact from a vehicle and self-recover. Unlike other systems that use springs, bollards cannot be deflected by hand and will not become unstable over time. If badly impacted by a vehicle the internal post will bend at ground level and need replacing (low cost). The bollard is removed and reinstated on the same foundations impact after impact. Bollards are removable and relocatable for events, maintenance and upgrades (additional sockets required for additional locations).

Smart-Stop Option : If you do not want bollard to deflect beyond 20 degrees, we install a solid steel internal rod that will stop a vehicle. Bollard and foundations remain re-usable impact after impact.

Surface Mount

Easy to install but not impact resistant and must be secured to large concrete foundation. These bollards often become unstable when impacted and almost all of them become unstable, unsafe and unsightly over time and are costly to replace. Standard surface mount bollards with welded base plate are not impact resistant adn when impacted by a vehicle the base plate, securing anchors or the bollard must give. Another problem is the base tends to rust and corrode and they are costly to replace. We have developed a sustainable alternative (see below)

 

 

 

Surface Mount Impact Recovery

Simply smarter surface mount bollards. Instead of welding the base to the bollard, the bollard is secured to the base plate using the Smart Impact Recovery System. This enables the bollard to absorb low speed impact from a vehicle and self-recover. The bollard cannot be deflected by hand (appears to a solid in-ground bollard), although if badly impacted by a vehicle the bollard is removed from the base plate and re-usable (impact after impact).  Only cost is a steel internal securing post.

Smart Low Impact Bollard

Designed for bike paths. This Poly Bollard is secured on In-ground Super-flex Impact Recovery System, enabling the bollard to deflect upon low impact (such as bike rider) and slowly self-recover. If badly impacted by a vehicle the bollard and surrounding foundations are re-usable (impact after impact).  We suggest using the In-ground version for bike paths so that bollard can be removed, leaving no trip factors.

Smart-Safety-Stop

The Smart Safety-Stop security bollard will stop a vehicle in it’s tracks. Surface Mounted, this bollard will absorb low speed impact from a vehicle, deflecting up to 18 degrees and self-recovering. Cannot be deflected by hand (appears to a solid bollard). If badly impacted by a vehicle the bollard will absorb the impact, deflecting up to a maximum of 18 degrees and stop the vehicle in it’s tracks.
