although can be truncated at any vertical rib or extended to any depth.
The socket must be installed flush with the surface to ensure it is not damaged when impacted and to avoid trip factors.
The Smart ground socket creates a protective shield between the item and the concrete foundations to make the item removable and the foundation re-usable. The quality of the concrete will determine the life of the foundation. Good quality concrete can last up to 100 years, whereas rapid-set can be damaged upon first impact - choose wisely.
Think of the ground socket as a protective shield - it does not affect the size foundation required.
The concrete foundations must be installed deep enough to ensure they are not dislodged when the item is impacted. This will depend upon existing soil conditions, existing foundations, size of item to be installed, wind conditions and the risk of impact from vehicles. Follow local guidelines, as soil and wind conditions differ from region to region
The Impact Recovery System reduces the size base required to secure a bollard as the System absorbs the impact force, protecting the foundations from damage. Using this Smart Impact Recovery System you can now install large diameter bollards from as shallow as 350 mm (or surface mount).
As a guide: (NB always refer to local authorities specifications if they differ from our suggestions as local conditions can alter requirements)

For new works - simply use installation tool to position ground socket upright and pour concrete to secure. The Ground socket is installed flush with the surface and must be completely encased in concrete. You can pierce hole in socket and place rubble beneath socket, to allow drainage or entry for electrical wiring. More Info
The socket is installed flush with the surface and must be completely encased in concrete (i.e: minimum 150 mm around the top of paved areas to protect surrounding paving from damage). Allow space for paving so socket finishes level with road or footpath. If there is soil beneath pavers we recommend you install a foundation beneath the pavers of at least 400 mm square to provide stability and ensure against dislodgement when an item is impacted. We do not recommend using 150 mm sockets in paved areas. More Info
The socket is installed flush with the surface and must be completely encased in concrete. Core drill hole large enough to fit the socket and fill the gap with concrete to secure socket to existing foundation. We recommend 150 or 350 mm ground sockets (650 mm is not necessary for solid concrete footpaths or foundations) NB: We also provide a Smart surface mount option. More Info
Socket is installed flush with surface and must be completely encased in concrete. We recommend you install a 700 mm deep (minimum 50 mm beneath socket (suggest increasing depth if soil conditions are sandy or for bollards likely to be impacted by trucks or heavy vehicles at low speed) x 300 – 400 mm square foundation to provide stability and ensure against dislodgement when an item is impacted. If the soil is sandy we recommend a 400 mm square and you can bell out the bottom to provide added stability. More Info
By using Smart Sustainable Foundations posts and other roadside items such as bollards and grab-rails, can be installed from 150/ 350 or 650 mm depth (as opposed to 900 mm depth specified by MRWA for the installation of RHS posts). More Info
*Warranty is void if ground sockets are not installed according to instructions.
